🚨 Smoke Alarms & Fire Safety FAQ

How does a smoke alarm work?

A smoke alarm monitors the air for smoke and invisible particles created by combustion. When detected, the alarm sounds to alert occupants before the situation becomes dangerous.

How are smoke alarms powered?

Most new smoke alarms are powered by 10-year lithium-ion batteries. In Illinois, state law requires 10-year smoke alarms in all dwellings that do not have hard-wired detectors.

Older smoke alarms typically use a 9-volt battery, which should be replaced twice a year. Illinois law also requires that any dwelling constructed or remodeled after December 31, 1987, have 110-volt hard-wired smoke alarms. When multiple alarms are installed, they must be interconnected so activation of one triggers them all.

Where can I purchase a smoke alarm?

Smoke alarms are available at hardware stores, supermarkets, and appliance retailers. The Zion Fire & Rescue Department can assist you in determining the proper type and number of alarms for your home.

What does a smoke alarm cost?

Most smoke alarms cost between $10 and $25. As long as they carry a UL or FM seal of approval, they are suitable for residential installation. Many models include a 5-year warranty.

How should smoke alarms be mounted?

Because smoke rises, alarms should be mounted on the ceiling or high on the wall for best detection coverage.

How many smoke alarms do I need?

At least one alarm per floor of your home, including the basement.

Where should smoke alarms be placed?

Install alarms in hallways outside sleeping areas, in living spaces, and in each bedroom if possible. Multi-story homes need at least one per level. Avoid kitchens, bathrooms, and garages unless the alarm is specifically designed for those areas, as steam and fumes can trigger false alarms.

What maintenance is required?

Test each alarm monthly by pressing and holding the test button until it sounds. Replace batteries twice a year — a good reminder is when you change your clocks for daylight saving time. Replace any smoke alarm that is more than 10 years old.

What should I do if the smoke alarm sounds?

When a smoke alarm activates, those few minutes of early warning are critical. Evacuate immediately and follow your family’s pre-planned Exit Drill in the Home (E.D.I.T.H.) procedure. Once outside, call 911 from a safe location and never re-enter the building.
