Zion Fire and Rescue Foreign Fire Insurance Board
The Illinois Foreign Fire Insurance Fund is distributed by the state of Illinois Municipal League. The Municipal League collects insurance taxes from companies outside of the State of Illinois. Those funds are distributed to fire departments across the state to provide for the needs of the departments as the department sees fit to compensate for what is not provided by the municipality. A foreign fire insurance board shall be created within the fire department of each municipality with fewer than 500,000 inhabitants that have an organized fire department, employs full-time firefighters, and is subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The board shall consist of 7 trustees; the fire chief, who shall hold office by virtue of rank, and six members, who shall be elected at large by the sworn members of the department and be represented by a minimum of one battalion chief, one lieutenant, and 3 firefighter paramedics.
Member of the Foreign Fire Insurance Board shall serve for a designated term of two years and until their successors have been elected and qualified for office. Department officers will be elected on odd years and firefighters/paramedics on even years. Any vacancy shall be filled for the balance of the unexpired term by a special election requested by the remaining members of the Board to the department. Following each regular election in December each year, the Board shall elect which will serve as President, Treasurer, and Secretary. The officers of the department foreign fire insurance board shall develop and maintain a listing of those items that the Board feel are appropriate expenditures under the statute.
The Foreign Fire Insurance Board (FFIB) will meet on a quarterly basis; the second Wednesday in March, June, September and December unless a special request has come before the board, or when the President deems an additional meeting becomes necessary. The Board meets at the Zion Fire and Rescue Station #1, 1303 27th Street; Zion, IL 60099.
