Water Billing – Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. When is my water bill due?
A1 – The City is divided into three sections for billing. To see which section you’re in, visit the City’s website
www.cityofzion.com,
click Departments → Accounts & Finance, and follow the prompts for your address.
All water bills are due 20 days after the notice date. Check your current bill for the exact date.
Q2. Is there automatic payment with a credit card?
A2 – Not at this time. We offer auto-payment from your checking or savings account only.
Q3. Why do I have to be home to restore water service?
A3 – If a faucet is open, turning on water without someone present could cause damage. We only restore service when an adult is home.
Our personnel will knock or ring the bell. If no one answers at a scheduled time, a grey card is left and you must call Public Works to
schedule for the next day. We don’t make repeated unscheduled trips.
Q4. I paid—when will service be restored?
A4 – Public Works is notified once payment is received and restores service in the order payments were received.
If you were 50th to pay that day, you’ll be 50th on the list.
Q5. What does a grey door card mean?
A5 – Staff came to restore service but no one responded. Call Public Works at
(847) 746-4060 to set an appointment.
Q6. Are water billing policies available in one place?
A6 – Yes—see the back of your water bill for policy details.
Q7. My mailed payment didn’t arrive—how do I restore service?
A7 – You must still pay by cash, credit card, or money order.
We will try to intercept the original mailed payment and return it; otherwise it will post as a credit when received.
Q8. I need more time to pay—what can I do?
A8 – Be proactive and call (847) 746-4008. If you qualify, we can issue an extension
when signed by the homeowner or your landlord. Pay half at signing; the balance is due by the last business day of the month.
Q9. Why did I get a Termination Notice if I already paid?
A9 – Payments and notices can cross in the mail. When in doubt, call
(847) 746-4008 to confirm receipt.
Q10. My payment is due today by 5 PM and I can’t get to City Hall—options?
A10 – Call (847) 746-4008. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover by phone
and provide an authorization number immediately if approved. You may also use the night drop box outside the front doors.
Q11. Do you accept after-hours payments?
A11 – Yes. Use the night drop box on the south side of City Hall. Place a check or money order in the box—
no cash. Items are collected/opened at 8:00 AM each business day. The drop box is available 24/7/365.
Q12. Why do I have to pay a deposit?
A12 – The deposit establishes credit with the City and is based on usage history (varies by residence).
After two years with no late payments, the original deposit is returned with 4% interest.
Deposits for new construction are $100.
Q13. Can I pay monthly?
A13 – Yes. You may pay in advance; payments will be credited toward your next quarterly bill.
Q14. Can I change my billing date to match my paychecks?
A14 – We can’t change billing dates, but you can pro-rate payments in advance to align with your pay schedule.
Q15. What is a Closing Letter and why do I need one?
A15 – A Closing Letter states any amounts owed to the City. Your attorney typically requests it for closing.
It confirms the seller removed services from their name and finalized with the City—so you don’t inherit prior bills.
Q16. Why do I need a Final Reading?
A16 – Finals provide an accurate reading to close or open your account.
You want your service to start with usage you incur—and avoid remaining on someone else’s bill.
