The Water Division has one (1) meter reader who reads an average of 1,984 homes per month.
TRACE Radio Read Meters
The Water Division utilizes the TRACE radio meter-reading system. TRACE uses radio signals to quickly collect meter data with a portable interrogator as staff drive through a route—even in dense neighborhoods.
Readings are sent only in response to a digitally encoded interrogation signal containing the meter’s unique ID. This eliminates the need for physical access or contact with the meter. Collected readings are downloaded at the office for billing.
Customer convenience: Locked yards, gates, and pets no longer prevent reads—reducing estimates and repeat visits. “Exact time” appointments are available Mon–Fri, 7:15 A.M. – 4:10 P.M.
While TRACE is currently in use, we are converting to the Meta-Net MTU system.
Repairs
If an unusual reading (or no usage) is noted, a notice will be left requesting that you contact the Water Division to check the meter. Please call promptly to schedule—we make every effort to offer “exact time” appointments.
To better serve customers, the Water Division and Accounts & Finance monitor for bills that are 20% higher (or unchanged) vs. normal and may notify you by mail. If you receive a letter and don’t know the reason, call City Hall or the Water Division to schedule an inspection. We’ll determine whether the usage is due to plumbing issues or a meter/reader problem.
Cold weather reminder: Homeowners are responsible for protecting water meters from freezing. Seal drafts near plumbing and meters to avoid damage and repairs.
Access Ordinance
Sec. 94-352: Upon reasonable demand, owners/occupants must provide access for reading, maintaining, or repairing water meters. If meter notices go unanswered, a red card will warn that water service will be shut off unless access is granted. Please respond promptly.
