Potholes

Potholes are holes in the roadway that vary in size and shape. They are caused by the expansion and contraction of ground water after it has entered beneath the pavement. When water freezes it expands, pushing upward and bending or cracking the pavement, which weakens the surface.

Crews repair potholes in neighborhoods throughout the city all year long. The months of December through April are considered the heart of pothole season—when the city typically sees the highest number of repairs. However, crews continue work throughout the spring, summer, and fall.

During the cold winter months, high-performance cold-patch asphalt material is used for temporary repairs. Hot mix asphalt is used during the spring, summer, and fall for permanent repairs.

Repairs

The small crew of 10 Street Division employees is responsible for maintaining approximately 100 miles of streets and 55 miles of alleys throughout the City of Zion.

Street Sweeper

The street sweeper operates approximately nine months of the year—from March through December—to maintain clean and safe roadways.
