Maintenance
The Water Division regularly exercises and maintains approximately 800 fire hydrants in the City of Zion.
Flushing
All fire hydrants are flushed on a yearly basis. Flushing helps improve water quality by maintaining adequate chlorine residuals and reducing scale in water mains. It also serves as preventative maintenance, allowing staff to inspect each hydrant for proper operation.
Hydrant flushing is conducted in the fall and the schedule is published in the paper. Please avoid doing laundry on the day hydrants are flushed in your area and wait until after 4:00 P.M. the following day. Hydrant Flushing schedule can be found here.
Illegal Use
It is unlawful for any person not authorized by the superintendent of water and sewer to tamper with, alter, or injure any part of the City waterworks or supply system, including any meter.
It is also unlawful for any unauthorized person to use water from City fire hydrants. Persons receiving permission from the Department of Public Works must utilize a City-provided hydrant meter; a deposit is required to obtain a meter.
