Commissioner Christopher Fischer
Commissioner of Accounts & Finance and Mayor Pro-Tem
Christopher Fischer was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and is the eldest of four boys. The family later moved to Indiana, where he attended and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1982. He showed strong aptitude in Art, History, Literature, and Theater.
After high school, he joined the U.S. Army, trained as a Military Intelligence Analyst, and was deployed to West Germany with the 103rd Military Intelligence Battalion. While stationed there, he met fellow service member Christie Thomas of Indianapolis. Following their enlistments, they married and recently celebrated their 30th anniversary.
Based on his military and intelligence experience, Fischer entered the professional security field for the next decade, serving as a supervisor and account manager for both contract and in-house clients. During this time, he also earned an Associate Degree in Advertising Design while working third shift and attending school during the day.
In 1995, the Fischers purchased their home in Zion, where they continue to reside. The following year, he joined the American Medical Association (AMA) in Chicago, supervising the day-to-day operations of their security staff. His skills and reliability led to a transition into the AMA’s Human Resources department, where he advanced to his current position as a Human Resources Information Specialist.
Over the years, his interests have turned toward public policy, politics, and governance. He has served as a Lake County Election Judge and from 2013 to 2017 served as a Trustee for the Lake County Public Water District, which provides water service to Zion, Winthrop Harbor, and Illinois Beach State Park.
Believing that a healthy democracy requires direct engagement and public service, Fischer ran for the office of Commissioner in 2013 and again in 2015, successfully being elected as Commissioner for the City of Zion on April 4, 2017.
