The Zion Police Dept is an accredited agency since 2003 with CALEA (Commission
on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) and as such we are required to have an on-site assessment every three years by outside CALEA professionals.
In December 2005 three CALEA assessors (law enforcement managers from California and Texas) spent four days at our agency examining all aspects of our operation and determined that we were in compliance with over 425 professional CALEA law enforcement standards, and furthermore recommended that ZPD be
re-accredited at the March 2006 CALEA conference in Jacksonville, FL.
Verification that the Zion Police Department meets the Commission's
state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process
to gain re-accreditation. CALEA accreditation is a highly
prized recognition of law enforcement excellence.
The inspection team found the Zion Police Department
to be one hundred percent in compliance with the mandated
The Zion Police Department had to comply
with 443 standards in order to maintain its accredited status.
According to Former, Zion Police Chief Larry Booth "accreditation
is an outstanding tool that allows an outside group of practitioners
to evaluate every aspect of a police agency to insure that
it is, in fact operating at the highest professional level."
Once an agency is accredited, it must submit
to CALEA reassessment every three years to maintain its accredited
status. During the three-year period, the agency must submit reports attesting to its continued compliance with the standards
under which it was initially accredited.
