Zion Crime Down / Arrests Up

The Illinois Crime Index / Crime Rate Comparison (2009 / 2008) was released on 4-26-10. According to the Illinois State Police report, total crime in Zion is down 3.6%.  The same report indicates that total arrests made by Zion Police Officers increased 45.5%. The report is compiled from data using the following eight categories of criminal activity. Murder, Criminal Sexual Assault, Robbery, Aggravated Assault/Battery, Burglary, Theft, Motor Vehicle Theft, & Arson. Additionally, statistical data includes a break down of drug crime arrests. Zion Police made 130 arrests for controlled substances in 2009, compared to 120 in 2008. While most categories fluctuated up or down a few percentage points, reported incidents of Aggravated Assault/Battery went up 117 %. Arrests for The same category went up over 276%. Aggravated Assault / Battery is when one person places another in actual physical belief that they are in danger of being struck (hit), or physically do strike (hit) them. Simply put, this is people fighting, including Domestic Battery. This is also one of the categories where Police Officers take a traditional reactive role and have very little deterrent impact. I would like to note that even during these very tough economic times, crime reduction remains a priority for Zion Mayor Lane Harrison, Police Commissioner Lloyd Detienne, as well as the entire Zion City Council. Programs such as neighborhood watch, nuisance abatement, and other public relations outreach opportunities, contribute to a combined impact on reducing overall crime and improving the quality of life in Zion. Finally, I would like to commend the outstanding police work by the men and women of the Zion Police Department demonstrated by the increased number of arrests. The Illinois Uniform Crime Reporting Program will provide complete statewide data later this year on the Illinois State Police web site.
