Route 66 – A Route to Positive Change

Veterans represent 26% of our current homeless population in America.  More than two-thirds of them served during or after the Vietnam War and were stationed in war zones for three or more years.

85% of them have earned a diploma or GED compared to only 56% of non-vets.

Just some facts, statistics and numbers about a group of people that maybe aren’t part of your regular routine, right?  Not so.  They are the brave men and women who chose to serve their country on our behalf.  The President of the United States has stated that as long as there are veterans and veteran family members searching for shelter on the streets, we as a nation have failed in our duty to honor them.

Inspired by those words, Julie Lo Coco began a mission to make a difference.  Working with the North Chicago Veteran’s Administration campus she developed a business plan based on the concept that if you give a vet a job instead of a handout he or she will chose to transition back into a civilian life.

The model she created is called Route 66 Vets: A Family Thrift Store.  The first location opened in Waukegan last week and we are working with the VA to attract a similar opportunity for Zion.  Route 66 stores will be owned and operated by US veterans who have made a commitment to a route of positive change, the company’s motto.  For the first time in perhaps years, these men and women will feel the pride of being employed, finally getting out of a system of dependency and giving back to communities they once fought to keep free.

If you would like to show your support for this inspired new company here in Lake County you are invited to make donations of clothing, furniture and household items at the Waukegan store located at 109 South Genesee or contact them at Rt66vets@aol.com.  Their direct phone number is 847-360-0678.  All donations are tax deductible and proceeds are all used to fund new opportunities for veterans on the road to a new life.

There will also be a fund raiser held at Zion Culver’s next Thursday, April 1st, from 4-9.  10% of all sales will be donated to help Route 66 and you are welcome to come out and meet Ms. Lo CoCo and several of the veterans who are benefiting from this innovative new approach.  What veterans want is a hand up, not a hand out….Route 66 may just lead them there.
