Up for a Photogra-bee Contest?

A very good friend of mine, Jim Smith, wrote a book titled “Walk Through Town – A Tour of Tuscumbia, Alabama”.  He tells the story through the eyes of a 10-year old boy and recalls his good and not-so-good memories of his beloved hometown nearly sixty years ago.

Throughout the book are vintage photos of the places and people that defined his personal experiences, but also preserved the unique and timeless character of a moment in his city’s history that so many others can now share.

As we are beginning to collect ideas and pictures for the upcoming 2008 Zion Community Calendar, another friend suggested it would be interesting if we held a contest of sorts to see if some of our Zion residents would be willing to share some of their personal photos of places and people that capture our own city’s unique personality.

The calendar must be ready to go to print by September and it requires months of preparation to verify dates and events.  Along the way it would be very exciting to see the variety of photos our residents would like to include as part of this project.  If you have a vintage photo or a particular shot of something you’ve taken recently that captures the spirit of the community, its wondrous beauty through the seasons, an event or building you believe represents Zion’s history or personality, past, present or future, please send it in a .jpeg
or .pdf format to sherryf@zion.il.us no later than June 1st, 2007.  Sherry is part of our Economic Development team here at City Hall and will verify receipt of your message.  If your photo is selected to be included in the new 2008 Community Calendar you will receive full credit in the printing and the photo selected for the cover shot will be awarded a $200 grand prize.

So start looking through your attic and scrapbooks or make use of the new digital camera you received for Christmas!  There is no limit on the number of photos you can submit for consideration, just please keep the idea in mind that this is for a community calendar celebrating our city’s incredible charm and historical relevance as a place of faith, family, racial equality and incredible natural beauty.  Good luck and as we can only say in Zion, Long Live Photogra-bee!
